5 Signs Your Attic Insulation Needs to Be Removed (Not Just Added To)

Adding insulation over the top of old material is cheaper — but only when the old material is clean and dry. Here are five signs your attic needs a full removal and reset instead.

1. Rodent evidence. Droppings, tunneling, and nesting mean contamination and odor. You can't just bury that — it needs to come out, and the space needs sanitizing.

2. Musty or persistent odors. Smells drifting down from the attic usually mean moisture, mold, or pest activity in the insulation.

3. Water staining. Past roof leaks leave stained, matted insulation that's lost its R-value and may harbor mold.

4. Heavy compression. Decades-old insulation compresses down to a fraction of its rated R-value; adding on top of a failing base is inefficient.

5. Dust and allergens. Deteriorating insulation sheds particles into your living space. If your air quality has slipped, the attic is a common culprit.

If any of these sound familiar, a removal, sanitize, air seal, and reinstall is the right investment. We'll always tell you honestly which path your attic needs.
