Common Insulation Mistakes Homeowners Make

Insulation seems simple — more is better, right? Not quite. These are the most common (and costly) mistakes we see on Central Valley homes.

Skipping air sealing. Insulation slows heat transfer, but it doesn't stop air leaks. Blow insulation over unsealed top plates and penetrations and your conditioned air still escapes. Seal first, then insulate.

Adding over contaminated insulation. Piling new material on top of rodent-damaged or moldy insulation traps the problem and wastes money. Contaminated material needs to come out first.

Ignoring R-value targets. Many homes sit at R-19 when they should be at R-38 or higher. If you don't measure, you're guessing.

Blocking ventilation. Insulation stuffed into soffit vents chokes attic airflow and can cause moisture problems. Baffles keep the air path clear.

DIY in a superheated attic. A Valley attic can exceed 150°F. Beyond the discomfort, uneven DIY coverage leaves gaps that undercut the whole job. Even coverage is what delivers the savings.
